Read the BOOK REVIEW OF 'THE ALCHEMIST' BY PAULO COELHO

SUMMARY of ALCHEMIST

The main character or protagonist is Santiago, a shepherd boy.The name Santiago in  Spanish is for St. James. St. James is revered Catholic saint.

The central message of the novel is that is one must pursue their dreams. That’s perhaps the reason why Paulo Coelho’s novel starts with a dream.

Santiago dreams of finding a  treasure for which he will have to travel the world. The protagonist is brave enough to  pursue his quest to unearth the treasure. To make his dream come true he bids farewell to his home ,Spain and travels through the markets of Tangiers, and into the mighty Egyptian desert. On the way he gets deceived, falls in  love, experiences loses, also earns money, becomes fluent in a foreign language, befriends strangers, deals with both happy and grim circumstances. Santiago’s quest is adventurous and full of  lessons, where he is privileged enough to meet a  king and an alchemist.

Social Impact and My Views on ‘The Alchemist’

Alchemist highlights the core values of faith, belief, spirituality and love through emblematic accounts of a charming story of a common boy with phenomenal faith. It educates the audience in an ethereal and effective manner, the power of self-belief.

The book is originally authored in Portuguese. I am really fond of this novel by Paulo Coelho, mainly because it endorses positive thinking and self- belief. I think this what is important these days. I have never had the experience of visiting a desert but after reading ‘ The Alchemist’ , I could envision myself in the middle of a mystical desert and experience  the excitement and thrill associated with it. The  book  has succeeded in it goal to make the viewer completely acknowledge the fact that  having faith in your destiny can actually  result in  accomplishing your dreams.
